Guacca
Newly opened Mexican fusion spot Guacca is located at the Gigiri Courtyard in Gigiri. The last time I was here I almost lost my life so it probably wasn’t a good idea to go back but alas… I clearly made it out unscathed if you’re reading this review now so we remain grateful:)
Guacca makes up the plethora of restaurants at the courtyard and I noticed some new spots I haven’t tried yet so looks like I may go back yet again to try them out. It has both indoor and outdoor seating at the communal food court and also offers a variety of entertainment for kids and those young at heart too. I came here for an early dinner with a friend & chose to sit outside because the vibes were really vibing out there.
Our waitress, Ida, brought us the menu and I know I love a brief menu but I do worry about how a good number of places are exclusively doing paper menus now aka wasting paper because you have to reprint new copies very often since plain exposed paper is definitely not sustainable in a restaurant setting… We complained about the QR code menus but we also want well designed and sustainable menus too - millennials can’t be helped lol.
Anyway - back to the menu. They have a good selection of items, and their drinks look fun just from the descriptions alone. I started out with some chips & salsa via their salsa trio dish (KSH950) just so I could get a feel of the different salsas they have. I tried the salsa Roja, the mango pico de gallo and the salsa verde italiano. I had asked her to make sure one of the salsas was a spicy one just for a good balance of taste.
NONE of the salsas were spicy. At all 😑 I was told the mango pico de gallo would be but alas… just mango kachumbari lol… The salsa verde italiano has a superb basil base though. The one salsa that used to be spicy, was made super mild because apparently patrons complained and I know Kenyans generally can’t handle spice, but the whole point of a mexican spot is flavor and spice though… Also, them selling salsa at 450/ for a very small bowl is daylight robbery (esp if it’s not spicy), just my two cents.
So starters aside, I remained hopeful for the mains. We decided to try both the pork tacos (2 for KSH1450) and the fish tacos (2 for KSH1300). I also got the passion fruit nojito (KSH550) which was a fantastic drink and very refreshing for this heatwave we’ve been experiencing.
The star of the show was definitely the tacos. Particularly the 12hr slow cooked pulled pork tacos 🤤 I don’t know how else to describe them other than divine! The flavour, the juices, the FLAVOUR 😍 That first bite had me tasting every caramelized onion, every strand of juicy pork, every string of vintage cheddar and every drop of chipotle reduction… absolute perfection in a taco. The dish comes with a little bowl of broth that’s a nice accompaniment to the meal.
The fish tacos are a close second to the star above because the portions of fish were so much! Crispy chunky pieces of battered tilapia covered in pico de gallo, garlic mayo and some crispy slaw… drizzle some lemon juice on it and you will have a fantastic flavour explosion in your mouth 😋 so so good!
Those tacos remedied what the chips & salsa almost ruined - a superb dining experience. I haven’t had good tacos like that in quite some time, I highly recommend them.
The service here was quite slow, Ida seemed to be the only wait staff serving a number of tables, not sure why but I think that could be improved on.
Guacca seems like a great place for a fun lunch or chill dinner on a Friday night with friends or for a date. The Gigiri courtyard as a whole is such a vibe, especially on weekends, love that they have so much to offer in terms of food and entertainment combined for people of all ages.
