Seafood Cafe & Swahili Dishes - Watamu
Last but not least on the #watamueats series is Seafood Cafe. This roadside cafe is quite easy to find, it’s right by the main Watamu sign on Gede Road. It’s a simple restaurant with very little thought to decor and ambience though I did appreciate the graffiti murals on the walls. The place gives very much kibanda-esque vibes which I was happy because that means the food will be excellent

Papa Remo - Watamu
I love a good beach side restaurant and Papa Remo is just that with all the vibes to match It’s spacious with lovely coastal decor, comfortable lounge areas and a great central bar. The ocean breeze welcomes you as you walk in and head towards the tables on the beach (best seats in the house imho). The views my goodness!
I came here for a solo dinner and I was very ready to stuff my face.
Kokomo Beach Bar - Watamu
Kokomo is a Lebanese-Mediterranean beach bar and restaurant located right by where I was staying so this was the first place I tried in Watamu. I went there at night so I didn’t get a full view of what it looks like during the day but I like the day beds they have overlooking the ocean, perfect for chilling and sundowners and the booths in the restaurant were quite comfy.
Lichthaus - Watamu
We are finally getting into the Watamu series! Starting the series with the very popular Lichthaus restaurant that is located by Mida Creek Watamu. We’ve all seen the nets, we’ve all wanted a picture while sitting on those nets, we’ve all wanted to watch the sunset while sipping cocktails on those nets… what we didn’t know was the process of getting on those nets…
We had just docked at Lichthaus after a wonderful dhow ride along Mida Creek so the vibes were high and everyone was excited to eat and drink.
Hashmi's BBQ
Hashmi’s is a staple in the Kenyan food industry scene having been around since the mid 1990s up until now. Y’all remember they shut down for a while and we thought it was forever and went there in droves only to have it open back up in a different building a few months later? That was smart marketing targeting customer loyalty.
Hashmi’s BBQ is now located at Broadwalk Mall in Parklands and this is their biggest branch yet within Nairobi.
Five Senses
This fine dining restaurant is located at Galana plaza in the heart of Kilimani. It’s a French cuisine restaurant with an additional African flare to all their dishes. A hostess meets you at the door when you enter to direct you to your table. I found the place quite inviting - warm lighting, ambient music and well spaced seating so it doesn’t look too cramped.
For a fine dining restaurant though, I felt like their decor and furniture was quite dated, giving it a more aged feel as opposed to luxury… I think they need to spruce it up a bit to match their brand and their prices.
Dawn
Dawn is a cosy and intimate restaurant located in Kilimani, at the Loft Apartments. It’s not too big but also doesn’t feel cramped either. It has seating space both outdoors and inside, very simple decor with an emphasis on their wine selection so this is a place for wine lovers in particular.
I went there for dinner on a weekday and it was pretty empty, think we were the only ones there for quite a while, which I didn’t mind, felt like we had reserved the whole place for ourselves.
Fig & Olive - Tigoni
We are in Tigoni today at the very picturesque Fig & Olive. It has such a nice, quaint farmhouse vibe, lots of bohemian decor and a very stunning vintage Ford Model A & VW Beetle right at the entrance. When you walk in you’ll be met by their retail store first which is fully stocked with unique home decor pieces, cool stationery and a variety of food products.
I’ve been here twice (once on a weekend and once on a weekday), and both times the place was equally busy so reservations are definitely required beforehand.
Cotton Tree
Cotton Tree is another new Vietnamese restaurant located in Gigiri. It has such a beautiful outdoor setup, the decor is very boho chic. It has lots of greenery and space for kids to play in. So because of its popularity, you can’t be assured of space if you just walk in, you definitely need a reservation. I tried to call in the morning to make a reservation but no one answered the phone so I decided to just go and try my luck.
Crave
So my very first impression of this place wasn’t the best… but given that I didn’t die in their final destination style parking lot, I said I’ll still give them a chance. I’m really that person who won’t go somewhere if parking is going to be an issue, it’s too much effort to be stressing about parking just to go have a meal.
No one warned me how bad the parking situation is at Crave but I’m letting y’all know now… if you can avoid driving there, just avoid it.
Akira
This Asian fusion restaurant is located on the 1st floor of Westgate Mall, Westlands. I was impressed by the decor already when I entered; the minimal wood styling and sleek furniture are so well done. They have different types of seating areas depending on what your mood is like. If you’re a big group you can take one of the bigger dining tables, if you want more of an experience you can try the Japanese style dining tables where the seats are not elevated and have you literally sitting on the ground - on very comfy cushions though!
The Location Rooftop
The Location is located in Kilimani, at Alta Towers to be exact. I like the play on words in the name and also a fun name to get decor inspo from judging by the big location icon right in the heart of the restaurant. It’s quite spacious and the floor to ceiling windows allows in a lot of light making it feel even bigger. The 360 view of the city is a nice bonus as well.
Măm Măm Vietnamese Kitchen
We finally have an authentic Vietnamese restaurant in Nairobi! Măm Măm is located at the Mwanzi Market in Westlands and is the first Vietnamese restaurant to open shop in Nairobi. I was very excited to try it out because they focus on Vietnamese street food and one thing about Asian cuisine, it’s gonna slap😋
The restaurant itself is such vibes already from the thematic red flowing through the place to the colourful seats and decor, it transports you to a place of fun, food and vibes.
Nick's Donuts
We’re talking about snacks today! I’ve been hearing and seeing a lot about Nick’s donuts for possibly over a year now but never really paid attention until recently. I’m not the biggest donut fan, I find them too doughy for my liking but these ones looked different from the classic donut so figured why not give them a try.
Thanks to my friend’s suggestion, I took a drive to their Gigiri location because their lavington location is just a pickup point.
Coffee & Bagels
Taking a small break from the big restaurants today to talk about this small but cool cafe in the middle of Kilimani. Right off Lenana Road, coffee and bagels has a nice big sign so you can’t miss it and is in the same compound as possibly the busiest car wash in the area (that place is never empty!)
When they first opened years ago, I was hesitant that they’d actually have good bagels and I was right… at the time.
Fiesta Farm
Fiesta Farm is located in the heart of Hardy, Karen. It’s quite a drive so prepare yourself accordingly in terms of time. The restaurant is set up on a vast compound which I assume also has the farm it’s named after. Loved the large amount of green space that people can use to chill in the sun, kids to play in… perfect for a sunny Sunday out.
Unfortunately we were there in the middle of June so it was the opposite of sunny - more like freezing, but because they know how to make their customers happy, there are plenty of Maasai blankets for you and your group to use to keep warm.
Sugar Bowl
We are in Spring valley today talking about Sugar Bowl - a very cute restaurant with a great menu to match. The decor is nice and simple and minimalist but also elegant - the warm lighting in various pockets of the restaurant particularly really caught my eye. Great lighting really makes or breaks a place. They have an upper and lower section with outside seating as well on both sections.
Yunion Brunch Café & Bar
Yunion is a brunch cafe and bar located at the GTC building in Westlands. It has a nice set up with both an indoor and outdoor section, outfitted very nicely, lots of greenery, lots of warm lighting - they also have a dinosaur statue outside which I found quite odd given their decor but I assume it has a purpose😄
Came here for an early brunch. Their menu seems to be a mix of Asian dishes, some continental dishes and Italian.
Open House
Open House is a very traditional family style restaurant. This was my first time visiting even though I know it’s been in existence in Nairobi for ages! I went to the Karen branch which is located at the crossroads shopping centre. I loved the homey ambience you feel when you walk in, it feels like you’ve walked into someone’s (very grand) but very comfortable dining room. The waiter was quick to get us a table and give us a breakdown of the menu since we wanted to try a bit of everything!
Supreme Smash Burgers
Talking burgers today🍔 Smash Burgers opened shop a few months ago and judging from the public response - they’ve been quite a smash hit😉
Smash Burgers is under the same brand as Crispy Chick and Ayeyo so you already know it’s a cloud kitchen restaurant i.e. delivery only. I have a thing about how burgers and pasta travel during delivery and so I tend not to order those often.
But in the name of trying new things, I gave smash burgers a try.
Traventure Cafe
Located in the leafy suburbs of Gigiri, Traventure cafe feels very welcoming from the onset and I think that’s mostly because it was someone’s home before. You get into the lobby/living room area and you’re immediately drawn to the back garden where the majority of the restaurant sits.
There’s lots of seating areas, lots of greenery, lots of grass and a swimming pool! So you can already tell this is a more big group, family style setting.
Ayeyo Restaurant
Ayeyo now has a dine-in restaurant! Love seeing a restaurant making big strides in such a short time😊 Located on the ground floor of Timau Plaza, Ayeyo takes up a nice little corner of the floor welcoming you with its stunning yet minimalist decor. Warm lighting, lush plants, comfy, cozy seats and a beautifully tiled backdrop in a stunning yet understated green… Everything here was outfitted in great detail and as a lover of great interior design, I was very pleased to see all the little bits and bobs that make up Ayeyo come to life.
Best In The West - Negril
On the very first day landing in Negril we were famished and luckily this place was very close to our hotel - literally a 5 minute walk. It was also one of the places I had noted down while doing research for this trip as it came highly recommended in many travel groups.
Best in the West can be described as a street food restaurant that is right by the roadside along Negril’s Norman Manley Boulevard.
Miss T's Kitchen - Ocho Rios
We are in Ocho Rios today🇯🇲 Miss T’s Kitchen came highly recommended from the internets so I was excited to finally try it out. It’s such a vibrant place with so much colour and a little playground right at the entrance😊
The hostess we met at the door wasn’t in the best mood though, not sure why… she barely wanted to seat us yet the place was quite empty for a Sunday evening.
The Pelican Grill - Montego Bay
Starting the Jamaican series today is the Pelican Grill that is located right on the Hip Strip of Montego Bay, overlooking the sea. It’s a family owned restaurant that’s been in business since 1964, serving up authentic Jamaican food. We came here for dinner on a Saturday night and didn’t find it too packed, which is nice. The decor feels very classic diner like, nice cosy booths with lots of room for big or small groups.
Cafe AMKA
Amka cafe is a very vibrant cafe located at Delta towers westlands. What I wasn’t expecting was walking through a gym to get to it lol. So is it part of the gym? They’re just sharing a floor? It’s very confusing.
Anyway… once you get past the gym part - you walk into the cafe which has both an indoor and patio section. I like the dark colour scheme they have going on with the pops of colour from the yellow cushion and the bright wood tables and chairs.
Abyssinia
Taking a trip to Ethiopia today by way of Abyssinia🇪🇹 The only Ethiopian restaurant I frequent often is Habesha so this was a nice new experience. I was at the Westlands branch for dinner with some friends. They have quite a cozy setup, both indoors and outdoors and the owner, Mikias was around and gave us a warm welcome telling us the story of how the family run business came to be.
Kez Organics Tasting Room
It’s quite a hidden gem, literally lol, tucked away on Lenana Rd, follow the Google maps diligently or you’ll miss the turning like I did. I had a dinner plan with a friend and we decided to try this place thanks to all the good things I’ve heard from many people.
Got here around 7pm and was surprised to find it very empty on a Saturday evening. I figured maybe people would come there later…nope, nobody came.
Cave à Manger
Cave à Manger is a branch of the Wine Box franchise that is a full on restaurant and not just somewhere for wine & tapas. Located on Karen Plains Rd, this place wasn’t the easiest to find - I think they need more signage in the compound they are in.
Once we found it though?? I was obsessed! You first walk into a wine cellar that has your pick of wines wall to wall throughout the cellar with a tasting table in the centre for those who would just like to do wine tasting.
The Nook Cafe & Bar - Nanyuki
Talking about a nice culinary gem in Nanyuki today. The Nook actually used to be in Nairobi and then they moved to Nanyuki to a bigger space that fits their aesthetic quite perfectly I feel.
Located on Haile Sellasie Drive, the Nook has a very ranch style aesthetic. Lots of grass, lots of wood features, and lots of outdoor seating available. They have a beautiful succulent garden built into some tables that made me wanna have a little succulent garden built into my coffee table too.
The Arbor
I’ve been wanting to visit the Arbor for many years now and finally got to do so a month ago with my aunt. Located on Manyani East road, the Arbor is a serene garden cafe that feels like a little escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
When you enter, the restaurant opens up to a vibrant garden with outdoor and some indoor seating as well. I came here on a sunny Sunday afternoon so it was nice to sit out in the sun but also get a nice shade from the big trees enveloping the whole garden.
Biscotti Cafe
If you’ve seen the video of the cheesecake with syrup being poured all over it then you know about Biscotti Cafe. Located in the Westlands Eatery Strip Mall, Biscotti Cafe is a cute little cafe that is very inviting from aesthetics alone.
With a light airy colour scheme of whites, pinks and light greys, entering Biscotti feels like stepping into a cloud. The feather like light fixtures are probably what add to that feeling making it feel super cozy but so breezy at the same time.
Mezza
The sun last week was so glorious, it prompted me to step out for lunch at Mezza. They are located at the new shopping complex on Rose Avenue, Kilimani, right at the top giving it a perfect rooftop vibe for a sunny day.
Mezza is known for its shawarmas and that’s really what I wanted to try but when I saw the menu and saw how juicy the burger was looking….
Oyster Bay
This place has been hyped for so long I was really wary of going to visit. I went there for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and for a place that is that popular it was quite empty at the time (1pm) which I didn’t mind.
The place is expansive, I like the airiness, the vast outdoor seating, the bar that feels like an island in the middle of the restaurant… set-up wise they got it hands down.
Bamba
Bamba is located on Amboseli road in Lavington but can be a bit tricky to find because the sign is quite hidden, they need bigger signage. The restaurant itself is set up quite nicely, it’s a semi-outdoor space with plenty of seating space either at the bar or the main dining space.
I came here for dinner with a friend and even though the place was empty at about 6pm, we were informed that all the tables were reserved and we’d have to dine at the bar so it’s quite a popular place.
Izzi Brunch & Cake
This is a place so many of you have asked me to visit for time! I decided to take my time going here to give them time to settle in because I’ve had many disappointments when visiting restaurants when they’re brand new.
I came here for brunch with my bestie and one thing about this place - AESTHETICS👌🏾 It’s giving the visuals Beyonce denied us, whewwww! It’s such a stunning place, I love the minimalistic theme, earthy colours and how open and airy it feels without actually being open and airy.
Sierra Brasserie
Sierra has maintained their quality of food, service & ambience for years and I really appreciate that about them. The balcony area is really my favourite place to sit!
I only come here for two things - their very sumptuous burgers and their dessert. Before they changed their menu they used to have this truffle mushroom burger that was the bees knees of burgers! I don’t know why they removed it and I hope they see this review and bring it back please.
Chez Sonia
Located in the Spring Valley area, this nice picturesque French eatery is a house turned into a restaurant and has such a vibey garden. I’ve been here a few times and each time I’ve tried a few different things just to go down their menu which is filled with a little bit of everything.
For starters my date and I had both the Camembert & Rosemary + Feta & Coriander samosas (KSH600 for 3).
Ain Korean Restaurant
Lemme start by saying how hidden this place is! And when you find it you’ll be shocked at how you’ve never seen it before-hidden in plain sight. I was invited to a Korean bbq dinner by Njambi. She hosts group Korean dinners every two months and they vary from either the hotpot selection or Korean BBQ.
Got here quite late because of searching for said entrance (don’t use google maps lol) but it’s a nice house that opens up to a vast compound in the back with various sections so it can host a lot of people.
Canopy Cafe
I visited Canopy Cafe this past weekend for brunch and I have lots of thoughts! The cafe is located in Ushuru Sacco Plaza, Kilimani.
The setup is very minimalist, with muted tones and scattered greenery. The space being quite large could do with maybe more greenery or some art work as the walls are bare making it feel emptier than it should be.
They have a limited menu, with brunch and lunch/dinner and a separate drinks menu.
Nairobi Street Kitchen
This place had people in a chokehold back in 2021 when they just opened! Been here maybe a total of two times only. The parking situation already usually puts me off from going back but I digress… I really like the street-esque look of the place, the graffiti and the artwork is dope but also… hatukuli vibes.
I tried a few different things - the tacos, teriyaki chicken & piri piri chicken from the bird exchange place and some gyoza from the noodle joint.
Unseen Nairobi
A rooftop cinema, cafe AND bar, Unseen was a fantastic find and it’s become a place I visit often when I need a change of work scenery:)
I had a nice little date here with my bestie and we really enjoyed the food there. We had pork bao buns, kimchi grilled cheese sandwiches, potato croquettes & Korean fried chicken (my fave!). I loved the Korean chicken and the bao buns the best, they were so flavourful, so filling!
Barista & Co.
I’ve been a fan of this place for quite some time now. I’m not vegetarian and I rarely go to vegetarian places by choice but one day I tried this place and I’ve been a loyal customer ever since!
Located at Keystone park in Riverside, Barista & Co is a cute little coffee shop and vegetarian restaurant that serves up a mean brunch. First of all - they have the best mint hot chocolate (KSH400) I’ve ever had & stay going back for, their lotus biscoff milkshake (KSH650) is so sinfully good and their hazelnut nutella latte (KSH450) is a must have!
Samaki Samaki Seafood & Jazz
It’s been a while since I’ve been here so I’m going off of memory. 1st of all - I must comment on decor… It’s a really well-outfitted place, feels very by the ocean without the ocean. The daybed section kwanza, top notch… I don’t know if they still have it but if they do, that’s the best section to sit at.
The menu has a lot of variety, my friend and I tried a couple of different things, chicken lollipops and prawn summer rolls for starters, both were really good.
Red Ginger
First of all, this place is so massive! It feels like a mall that has just one restaurant and it gets crazy packed - so make reservations beforehand if you can. They have an expansive menu filled with traditional Indian dishes, Indian bbq and oriental dishes as well.
We had bhajiaz, chicken tikka, some butter naan and garlic naan, and we also tried butter chicken, palak paneer & cheesecake for dessert.
Gelato Street
I came across this sweet find late last year and I’ve been obsessed ever since!
Tucked away in the far corner of the rooftop garden of Sarit centre, gelato street is an ice cream parlour after my own heart. They make artisan gelato that is fresh, flavourful and just addictive. They have an array of flavours with some that change on a weekly basis like passion sorbet and others that will always be there like cookies and cream.
The Daily Café & Bistro
I visited their Hurlingham branch at Doctor’s Plaza but they also have branches in Gigiri at the Gigiri Craft Centre and at Sarit Centre. It’s a really cute spot, their decor is A1. They have quite an extensive menu, with breakfast all day! I had waffles and a side of bacon, which came with some fruit & way too little whipped cream… why was it just a drop of cream?? I liked my meal but would have liked a better serving of whipped cream.
Crafty Chameleon
Located on James Gichuru road, Crafty Chameleon is both an outdoor & indoor restaurant which I really love - you get the best of both worlds 😊
I like the name too, nice play on words; Crafty i.e. Craft beer which they make in house btw and crafty - chameleons can be crafty little creatures … well that’s what I understood from the name, maybe they have a whole different meaning to it.
Nifty Cafe & Wine Bar - Tigoni
Another day, another great gem discovered in Tigoni. Tunahama Tigoni ama? It seems to be the new Naivasha and I’m not mad at it😊 Heard about Nifty many months ago from my cousin and I always wanted to go but just never had the time until December of last year.
I finally made my way down there with a dear friend for one of our many food dates😋 The drive to Tigoni makes me very happy, I think being surrounded by fresh air and lush greenery is what we are severely lacking here in the city so this little escape is worth it every single time.
Hero
I’ve been to Hero a couple of times between last year & this year & always had a fantastic time there. The food was great, the service was on point and the place just has great vibes! I had prawn tempura (quite large ones) which I felt had way too much batter tempura wise but all in all a good fleshy prawn on the inside.
I also had some very soft, flavourful lamb chops that was paired with a tangy sauce and some fries:) I know it’s a sushi place but I don’t eat sushi so I didn’t try any but my friend did and he absolutely loved it.
Peppertree
This beautiful rooftop garden restaurant is located in Westlands at Delta Towers. For those who remember it took up the space where Buddha Bad used to be. I haven’t been to peppertree in a very long time, probably in like four years now.
It’s not somewhere that really left a mark on me foodwise so I never thought to go back but as this was a birthday dinner plan, I decided to go and see if anything’s changed over the years.
Como Tigoni
Last December saw the great migration of Nairobians into Tigoni to experience the newest restaurant in that area - Como. Como made a splash in the food scene late last year and people were even more excited to find out that it is a restaurant by popular fine dining chef, Steph the Chef. If you’ve had her food when she was still doing deliveries only then you know she will give you quite an experience at her very chic eatery in beautiful Tigoni.
254 Beer District
Formerly where Nyama Mama used to be at Delta Towers, Westlands, the 254 Beer District is a nice take on a bar, restaurant and event space all in one. It has a great open layout that makes the indoors feel like you’re outside and the outdoors feel like you’re inside. The decor is very industrial and edgy, a mix of high and low tables, cool murals, exposed pipes and you can’t miss floating plants in a place like this to bring some warmth to the edginess.
Frangos Bar & Churrasquiera
Frangos is a Portuguese style restaurant, their focus being their chicken. I had the lemon & herb half chicken which comes with two sides of your choice, I had coleslaw and corn on the cob. Loved the chicken, very moist, very flavourful, and the corn had a nice chilli added to it as well. The coleslaw was just average. My friend had the rice option as a side which I tried and really liked how well spiced it is.
Bricolage - New York
New York is a foodie’s haven and I love trying out so many new restaurants whenever I’m there. During my last visit I went to a couple and this was the first one I documented. I went to dinner here with my cousin who lives in Brooklyn and swears by this place so I had to try it.
Bricolage is a modern Vietnamese restaurant that has a casual vibe to it.
Dillis Curries
My love for butter chicken has no bounds and Ando Foods get it right every time. Butter chicken is and will forever be a fave! The Palak Paneer was a first for me to try this year & the lactose intolerant in me persevered & survived.
I also tried the Chicken Masala curry - didn’t enjoy that one as much as the butter chicken but it wasn’t bad. The curries come with freshly buttered Naan or garlic Naan.
Yolo Ice Cream
Located in the CBD, along Aga Khan walk, this place is fairly new. I went on a Saturday afternoon which was not the best idea. It was filled with ALL the Gen Zs plus so many kids… Nothing against them but wow it was so full of the youths. There was a line outside the door guys… I didn’t want to come back again another day but my friend wasn’t willing to wait - so we left.
Mode Café
This is one of my favourite places to go to for brunch! They went really simple on decor: minimalist, muted tones and an open plan space which makes it seem bigger than it is, there’s some outside seating but majority is indoors.
The menu is quite limited, which may concern some but for what they offer I think the menu fits. We had some coffees, the Chicken and Waffle (KSH1,200/), Shakshuka (KSH1,200/), Apple Crumble French toast (KSH1,100/) and Prawn tempura (KSH1300/).
Super Wings
This is yet another Ando Foods creation, and it is also delivery only. They focus on a variety of wings and I’m not a major wings person but since I’ve enjoyed Ando’s other brands, figured it won’t hurt to try. So far I’ve tried 4 out of their 8 wing flavours - Lemon pepper, Sticky Asian, Classic BBQ & Thai Chilli Mango. Lemme start with the one I love the most - Lemon Pepper.
Geco Cafe
Geco Cafe has grown so much from the little cafe it used to be. I remember I’d always go there and get something to eat as I wait for my car to get washed at the Geco car wash.
Now it’s a full blown gastropub and the home of live music in Nairobi. I’ve been to Geco multiple times from the little cafe days to present day where all the cool kids hang out now.
Pot of Jollof Kitchen
Today’s review is about a place that pleasantly surprised me. It’s located along the Westfield Hub strip mall along Likoni road, Kilimani. My friend introduced me to this place on a day when I was so starved! I was ready to eat anything and he was like - let’s get Jollof! It’s quite small so not really a place to dine in but perfect for takeaway.
We got the Jollof lunchbox (KSH850), they had a BOGOF offer so one was chicken and the other had beef.
Marty's Burgers
If there’s one thing Ando Foods guys get right every time other than their food, it’s the packaging. With this brand - they were going for a classic American diner look with the red+white, the branded buns & checkered wrapping paper - love it.
I have had Cheeseburger (KSH900/) & the hot Chik’n burger (KSH850/). The Fries are sold separately at KSH150/. The Cheeseburger was okay, the portion is great, I just wish the patty had more flavour?
Little Italy
I’ve been eating so much Pasta from Little Italy in the past two years so this review may sound all over the place but just know it’s all because I love majority of their dishes. Little Italy is yet another brainchild from Ando Foods. My favourite item from their menu is the Tagliatelle Mushroom pasta which is quite a big portion for one person. I always add grilled chicken to my order and some garlic bread which is insanely good!
Khan's Pakistani Kitchen
I wanna highlight a brand I’ve really come to love - Ando Foods and particularly - Khan’s Biryani. I’ve had the sindhi chicken, mutton, & chicken masala biryani and I really enjoyed them all. Their packaging also is one of the best food package design I’ve seen in a while.
I also LOVE the fact that when you buy a meal they also make another of the same order to give to an under-privileged child.
Botanica Kitchen & Gin Bar
Botanica is located at One Place Africa, Westlands. They used to be Honey & Dough prior to this rebrand. I feel like they’re going for a more gastro/fine dining route & it’s working for them from the experience we had here.
They have quite a vibrant menu. I had the chicken curry bao buns as a starter while my lovely date had the duck breast carpaccio. For mains I had the fish & chips, and my friend had the Nasi Goreng.
Fifteen Rooftop
I’ve been here a few times, & the fact that I keep going back means I must like it. I really love their lemon pasta! I’m not usually a pasta person but this particular dish - I’m happy to have it over & over again. I added prawns to it because why not.
My friend had grilled salmon, accompanied with baby potatoes and some vegetables. We also tried the fried chicken bites for starters and their truffle fries that are quite addictive (but also cost 400/ so… order it one time unless your money is long lol)
Beit é Selam
I had heard such mixed reviews of this restaurant but I still went ahead to try it & it’s quickly become a place I love so much! Beautiful beautiful place. It’s not outfitted to be Instagram worthy with too many aesthetics, but it still gives off an almost exotic ambience, it really feels like you’re in a whole different place when you enter there. It has elements of Swahili/Arab theme decor and the courtyard is so softly lit giving cosy vibes.
Slate Kitchen & Bar
Upon getting here, the service was the first thing I noted. There are parking attendants at every point of the parking lot to direct you (it’s kind of confusing finding the entrance so I appreciated the assistance). The hostesses are welcoming and reservations are very necessary - the place gets full quick on Fridays and weekends.
The outfitting of this place my goodness! I love good interior decor & these guys have taken such detail in everything from the furniture to lighting, spacing, wallpaper, wallpaper texture… even the window sheers that make the space feel more intimate than it would had the windows been bare… this may not matter to most but I really love a place that not only looks great, but feels great too.
The Laughing Buddha
The Laughing Buddha is located in Kenrail towers ground floor and is also at the Sarit Centre - the new wing. It is fully vegetarian - which surprisingly I didn’t mind. I had a cute pink latte called the rose cardamom latte, some peri peri fries and the paneer bao buns. The latte was so cute but a little too sweet for my liking, though the cardamom really hit the spot!
Meso Izakaya
Meso is a fine dining Japanese restaurant located in the Westgate Mall, Westlands. Reservations are not needed but if you’re going as a group-that would be recommended. Prices are on the higher side as well so plan accordingly.
For starters we had popcorn shrimp tempura and pork gyoza. The shrimp was so good! It comes with a chilli mayo which I believe is the best condiment for that dish because I couldn’t stop eating it - or maybe it was my hunger lol, either way - a great choice.
Mawimbi Seafood Restaurant
Let me first talk about the service - I love that the hostess who greeted me at the door was so nice and gave me different options to choose from to sit despite having reserved a table for my party of two already. The place is really beautiful, gives off all the right vibes, especially at night, by the pool, they have a great band who played well and once seated we were tended to by the nicest waiter named Museti.
Chekafe
This is one of my favourite Japanese restaurants because they have the best Ramen. I only eat two things when I’m here - The Pork Ramen and the pork dumplings. A hot bowl of ramen is so perfect for the cold seasons and even the warmer seasons too.
They have a variety of different Ramen like veggie, chicken, spicy chicken, tofu etc. Same with the dumplings - fish, pork, chicken or tofu.
3Dee
3Dee restaurant is a restaurant that focuses on Kenyan food exclusively. It’s been around for quite a while but I only started visiting it more frequently in the last three years or so. Located at the 3Dee Apartment complex in Kilimani, the restaurant takes on the same name and is nicely tucked away in a corner of the complex.
It looks like your typical restaurant with very little fuss in the decor and aesthetics.
Cultiva Farm Kenya
I visited Cultiva quite a while back, over a weekend and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the food. The service though… not quite. But let me speak on the food first. We were there for brunch but apparently brunch is only served till 11? Isn’t the whole point of brunch is that it’s a meal served from late morning to late afternoon? Most places doing brunch in Nairobi refuse to actually do proper brunch hours and I don’t get why.
Siam Thai Kitchen
Talking about another cloud kitchen turned dine-in restaurant today! Siam Thai Kitchen is one of 7 brands under the Ando Foods umbrella and I love that their family just keeps getting bigger and bigger! (Still waiting on that dessert brand👀)
As the name suggests, Siam is a Thai restaurant serving up nothing but good authentic Thai cuisine and coming from the Ando brand, I really expect nothing less. They opened quite a while back but I didn’t get to try anything from there until a few weeks ago.
Crispy Chick
There’s so many eateries popping up every other week, it’s so hard to keep up with all of them. One place though that’s only been in business for just a few months is already making a mark in the industry - a super crispy mark at that.
Crispy Chick is a cloud kitchen that’s serving some very delectable fried chicken😋 Who doesn’t like fried chicken? Add different flavour varieties and I’m inside that story kabisa!
Kahvalti Cafè
I came across this place on Instagram’s explore page, I saw a few people talking about it and the food looked nice so I decided to try it one day.
It’s located on Lenana road, in the lobby of 197 Lenana Place office building. It’s quaint and not super spacious but it fits the cafe aesthetic really well. Cosy seating all around and great lighting especially in the corner seating areas.
Sea Wolf - New York
Sea Wolf in Brooklyn came highly recommended by some friends and reviews online seemed mostly positive so I was excited to try some fish in the big apple finally.
We ordered a few different things to try - the spicy shrimp basket, fish and chips, San Diego style fish tacos, grilled chicken salad and a classic burger. The only thing I enjoyed here was the spicy shrimp… The fish in the fish & chips was covered in a cake level of batter, I couldn’t eat past one bite.
Sweet Chick - New York
So I’m probably gonna sound biased but I truly feel like this is one of the best places for a good rich southern style brunch in New York. It’s one of my faves, and I always have to come here anytime I’m in this city and it never ever disappoints be it dine in or takeout👌🏾
So - context, Sweet Chick is a restaurant owned by Nas… yes that Nas. There are various locations in New York, Los Angeles and London too.
Golden Stool Kitchen & Bar
As always, I noticed the decor first. Love love the decor. There’s a particular velvet chair with roses on the back that I want in my living room but let me stop digressing sorry… (But if anyone knows who did their outfitting let me know please)
I’ve not had a lot of West African food so I was quite excited to taste all the peppery goodness because I’m a lover of all things spice.
Jamrock
This place was such a great random find thanks to a friend of mine who is actually Jamaican. Jamrock is a literal hole in the wall type restaurant located at GW Brook Business Park. You can spot it immediately you enter because who’s gonna miss the international reggae colours of red, green and yellow?😊
They have quite limited seating both on the inside and the outside but you can sit in the main area of the courtyard and your order will still be brought to you there.
Sno Cream
If you have not been to Sno Cream and you are born and raised in Nairobi, I need you to go there now. Like right now. Just close that laptop and head over there so you can understand and the classic Sno Cream experience.
Sno Cream is possibly the oldest ice cream parlour in Kenya and actually has a branch in Dar es Salaam that is just as old yet still in operation as well.
Salty Squid - Diani
This is one of my favourite places to eat at in Diani, I’m surprised it’s taken me so long to write about it! Also - fun fact, it’s a sister restaurant to Funky Monkey, didn’t know that until just the other day😄.
Salty Squid can be found along Diani beach road and the first thing you notice when you get here is the stunning ocean view! The restaurant opens up into a vast compound filled with vibrant seating areas, you can choose from the standard dining tables to the community style booths with very comfy cushions that will really ignite the itis after your meal😅
Shokupan
Shokupan is a cute little Japanese bakery in Sarit centre that I’ve been wanting to try. The menu was overwhelming because it’s quite long but everything looked so good! I tried a little bit of everything. I had the black sesame latte, the tiramisu pancakes, some mushroom & tofu gyoza, firecracker cauliflower bao buns & a strawberry shortcake.
I loved everything. My favourites were the pancakes and the bao buns & that cake!
Funky Monkey - Diani
Funky Monkey is a nice little spot along Diani beach road. I’ve been to Diani many times but I have never been here so I was very excited to have lunch here.
It was an overcast day so I didn’t get to capture its vibrancy as much had it been sunny. That aside - it’s still very well put together, tropical themes all through with the leso roofing, the vibrant murals on the walls and a nice open-air seating style.
Soy Asian Table - Kigali
Upon asking around for places to eat in Kigali, Soy was one that was mentioned multiple times. This restaurant is so beautiful. The ambience can be felt from the moment you step out into the driveway and are greeted by the big SOY sign emblazoned on a stunning cobblestone wall. The interior/exterior because it’s an outdoor restaurant that feels very indoor is just as inviting with its sea blue walls adorned with hanging plants and warm lighting at each corner making it feel like an oasis of sorts.
Pili Pili - Kigali
This is my second visit to Kigali after very many years and of course I had to hit up some restaurants. First up being - Pili Pili, quite a popular bar and restaurant in Kigali. It feels like more of a lounge than a full on sit down restaurant.
The first thing I noticed was the outdoor sitting area - there’s plenty of day beds, a vast pool (that no one was in) and it opens up to a fantastic view of the city of Kigali.
Mama Rocks Gourmet Burgers
Mama Rocks hit the scene back in 2016 and I remember being very excited for proper gourmet burgers and the fun flavours to boot. They’ve made a name for themselves in the fast food scene starting from the original food truck at the Alchemist to expanding with branches in various parts of the city today.
There was a point in time that their standards had dropped significantly for me, I’m gonna say around 2019, so I stopped going there completely until now, three years later.
Fonda Taqueria
A Mexican restaurant after my own heart! Fonda used to be located at the Rosslyn Riviera Mall and I really loved that location because of how much space it had. Luckily they didn’t close down completely and just moved to the rooftop food court at Sarit centre.
They’ve kept the decor very similar, bright colours, stained glass, nice little Mexican elements and they have enough seating both outside and inside the restaurant.
Ayeyo
This cloud kitchen restaurant is a newbie to the Nairobi food scene and they hit the ground running as soon as they launched back in July. Ayeyo is the Somali word for grandmother and a perfect brand name for this Somali restaurant cooking up fresh & delicious meals that taste like food your grandmother would make.
I recently got to try their signature dishes; the rice & hilib (goat meat, KSH1450/) and the rice & chicken (KSH1250/) and I have so much to say!
Nab a Burger
I’ve been wanting to visit this place for a very long time and planning for lunch here took an even longer time because aligning schedules with three other adults is an extreme sport. The popular Nab A Burger is located in the Office park complex in Riverside.
I thought it was a sit down restaurant but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it’s actually a food truck with a section of Office park’s compound used as seating space.
Burger Hut
If this isn’t a blast from the past I don’t know what is😄 Did you guys ever go to Burger Hut back in the day?? Did you also know that Burger Hut has been in business since 1986?? This was a staple Sunday lunch joint in my childhood and then it disappeared from my life for a while until my 20s and since then, it’s always been one of my go to places for simple yet juicy burgers.
Spring Valley Coffee
So I’m a tea girl through and through but over the years I’ve really come to love a good cup of coffee, and not just any coffee, really good coffee. Spring Valley Coffee is probably one of the best coffee brands in Kenya & a personal fave! So when I heard that they had a cafe, of course I had to check it out.
The cafe is located in the Lavington Business Hub just opposite Lavington Green.
Josephine's Caribbean BBQ
I’ve been here a few times and I always have a fabulous time. The food y’all… the food is so good! The owner told us to try a little bit of everything so we went for the platter which includes BBQ ribs, jerk chicken, lamb sausages, osso bucco, rice and beans, plantains, sweet potatoes, red slaw and grilled veggies.
That was a mouthful to write so you can guess it was a mouthful to eat as well.
Wasp and Sprout
Today’s review is coming from deep in Loresho, at a nice little family run cafe. Wasp & Sprout has been around for quite a long time but I’ve never visited before. Mostly because years ago they had this thing about closing at 2pm on Sundays which I found odd because why offer brunch if you’re gonna close that early? So that put me off going there but now they’ve extended their hours and their menu has also expanded quite a bit too.
Zero20
Located a few feet away from the Ankole restaurant in Kitisuru,, Zero20 is a fairly new restaurant, and it’s quite a big establishment. They have a fine dining section on the inside and a more casual dining section in the back area.
I was here for a birthday dinner so they had already done a nice little setup for our group in the back area.
The inside section is very formal so come dressed accordingly (though they’re not strict on dress codes).
Bao Box
I finally got to check out the newly redone Bao Box after what seems like very many years since I was last at the original Bao Box. It’s located on General Mathenge Drive in quite an expansive compound. The entrance is a nice little arch pathway covered in lights leading you into the reception area where you’re welcomed by the hostess and a nice neon sign blazing the words ‘welcome to the jungle’… okay theme!
Steph the Chef
I’ve been wanting to try anything from Steph the Chef for ages! Finally, one fine Sunday, together with some friends, I finally got to try her brunch package.
First thing to note - you need to order these in advance because they sell out really quickly. I think I reached out to her two weeks prior because the last time I tried to book a few days to - there were no slots left.
La Villa Restaurant and Wine Bar
Italian food is never a bad idea 🙃 La Villa is located in Kitisuru in a nice vast compound. It’s a beautifully done restaurant that has both indoor and outdoor sections, with plenty of space for large parties and intimate booths for smaller ones as well. I sat at a corner by a stunning wine bottle wall, the red tops and the dark bottles add to the moody ambience which I really love.
Classique Burger House
I’ve never actually visited this place but I’ve ordered from them plenty of times. If you’re looking for a place with simple yet great burgers, this is it.
They have a super popular combo called the fat boy combo that goes for KSH1,300 - it’s a double beef/chicken with all the works, lettuce, caramelised onions, cheddar cheese and this super yummy Turkish burger sauce that they have in all their burgers.
Capetown Fish Market - Zanzibar
I went to Zanzibar for work so of course I ate a bunch while I was there. Mostly hotel food though. One place I did visit that I would like to review is Cape Town Fish Market Zanzibar.
I’ve only been to the branch in Dar es Salaam, very many years ago so this was a nice refresher. It’s such a beautifully done restaurant, very big, very modern, very open, right by the ocean so the sunset views are as you’d expect - PERFECT.
Big Smoke
There was so much hype about this place, so I was a bit worried it wouldn’t match up but I actually had quite a pleasant time 🙃
Big Smoke is located in Karen, along Ngong road. There’s a very big sign on the road so you can’t miss it. When you enter it feels like you’re entering a barn but not a barn? I’ve never been to a Texas BBQ but if I was to imagine how one would look like, this comes pretty close.
Small Heavens Cakes
Small Heaven bakery sent me one of their medley boxes and being the sweet tooth that I am, I was very excited to eat cake all day everyday 😁 What I thought would just be a box of small sample sizes ended up being a big box of 8 healthy slices of cake! The flavours included Passion Fruit, Pina Colada, Sacher, Lemon Blueberry, Cinnamon & Cherry, Chocolate Mint, Fruit Delight and Lemon Poppy.
Nabo Bistro
Nabo Bistro is a place I don’t visit often but only because I’m not usually on that side of town often. If I was… I’d really be a regular. Tucked in a nice little corner of Lavington, Nabo Bistro is a restaurant that isn’t particular to a type of cuisine - they have everything from burgers, pasta, tacos, steak, sandwiches and breakfast too.
I came here for dinner with a very lovely friend and was surprised to find the place quite empty - it was probably a Wednesday evening.
The Wine and Bottle Grille
This bar & grill is located in Westlands, in Ambience mall. It has two floors, the ground floor has an outdoor section which I think is more of the dining area, it’s set up is quite different from the upper floor. Inside the restaurant though (still on ground floor) just has the kitchen and yes seating but it was so empty - from the time I arrived (3pm) to the time I was leaving (9pm), there was barely anyone sitting down there so I guess people prefer the outside area and the upper area.
Cuban Code
A new joint that’s giving Instagram girlies a run for their money is Cuban Code, a restaurant + cigar lounge located on Muthangari Road. I really have to say though - for a restaurant this fancy, why don’t they have signage on the road? I really thought Google maps had failed me because it leads you to this big office block called African Guarantee Fund - a building that looks VERY closed on weekends.
Pablos Mexican Bar
I heard about this place from a few people and never got a chance to visit until just recently. I never even knew the boardwalk mall existed until the day I went there😅
I thought Pablos was a stand alone restaurant but can you imagine the dismay on my face when I found it in the food court of this mall… a food court?? I’m already very worried.
I will give them props decor wise though, the place looks great and they have ample seating both inside and outside (the outside area saves the whole food court thing).
Pallet Cafe
Pallet cafe is located just opposite Lavington Green shopping mall, it has quite a small sign so be on the lookout for it so you don’t miss it.
It’s a completely outdoor cafe which I love! The grounds are so green and lush, plants everywhere and the hanging plants on the low corrugated roofing make it feel like an open greenhouse. You can choose to sit within the sheltered section or out on the grass when the weather is behaving.
Silk Noodles
Silk noodles is a Chinese restaurant located in the Shanshui hotel complex. It’s hard to miss it as there is a big sign right at the entrance. Ambience wise the place is nothing to write home about which is PERFECT because it means they’re putting all their focus on the food!
We got started with some chicken dumplings (KSH1,000), I didn’t know that an order of dumplings results in getting 20 of them!
Maboneng
Maboneng Wings and Whisky is located at Ntashart Plaza, Kilimani which also has a Sno Cream parlour for those of you who are lucky enough to not be lactose intolerant & can handle their yummy ice-cream.
Maboneng Wings have a nice long selection of wings. I wanted to try a bit of everything but there’s only so many wings you can have in one sitting so it’ll force me to go back to try more.
Le Grenier À Pain
This restaurant is one of my regular spots. I’ve spent a lot of time here over the years. If you come here in the morning the wonderful scent of freshly baked goods welcomes you and sits with you in their cosy round table booths. She may not remember this but a close friend of mine, Abigail, is the one who introduced me to this spot years ago when they had just opened.
Cocoa Cafe
Had a belated birthday dinner plan with a dear friend and she suggested we try out Cocoa Cafe located in Alta Towers, just opposite Yaya centre.
Upon walking in you are greeted by their large neon sign and the friendly waiter by the cashier. The place is smaller than I thought but stretches out into an elevated outdoors section which is perfect for afternoon tea or happy hour which they have from 5:30-7:30 daily.

Traventure Cafe

Came here for an early brunch. Their menu seems to be a mix of Asian dishes, some continental dishes and Italian.

The waiter was quick to get us a table and give us a breakdown of the menu since we wanted to try a bit of everything!

I was at the Westlands branch for dinner with some friends. They have quite a cozy setup, both indoors and outdoors and the owner, Mikias was around and gave us a warm welcome telling us the story of how the family run business came to be.

Botanica Kitchen & Gin Bar

Soy Asian Table - Kigali
Upon asking around for places to eat in Kigali, Soy was one that was mentioned multiple times. This restaurant is so beautiful. The ambience can be felt from the moment you step out into the driveway and are greeted by the big SOY sign emblazoned on a stunning cobblestone wall. The interior/exterior because it’s an outdoor restaurant that feels very indoor is just as inviting with its sea blue walls adorned with hanging plants and warm lighting at each corner making it feel like an oasis of sorts.

This is my second visit to Kigali after very many years and of course I had to hit up some restaurants. First up being - Pili Pili, quite a popular bar and restaurant in Kigali. It feels like more of a lounge than a full on sit down restaurant.

Siam Thai Kitchen

Bricolage - New York
New York is a foodie’s haven and I love trying out so many new restaurants whenever I’m there. During my last visit I went to a couple and this was the first one I documented. I went to dinner here with my cousin who lives in Brooklyn and swears by this place so I had to try it.
Bricolage is a modern Vietnamese restaurant that has a casual vibe to it.

Maboneng Wings have a nice long selection of wings. I wanted to try a bit of everything but there’s only so many wings you can have in one sitting so it’ll force me to go back to try more.

My friend had grilled salmon, accompanied with baby potatoes and some vegetables. We also tried the fried chicken bites for starters and their truffle fries that are quite addictive (but also cost 400/ so… order it one time unless your money is long lol)

We got started with some chicken dumplings (KSH1,000), I didn’t know that an order of dumplings results in getting 20 of them!
